The Pretoria and Johannesburg areas can produce good numbers of butterfly species at the right times of year. Some of the better area's include the northern 'bushveld' regions. Site's such as Loding near Mkhombo Dam, Dinokeng and various sites along the Magaliesburg can be excellent. Suikerbosrand Nature reserve surrounds and both Pretoria and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are all well worth visiting.

With over 670 species of Butterflies, it is safe to say that South Africa has a lot to offer the experienced Lepidopterist and the general enthusiast.
Popular destinations include: The midlands and zululand of Kwa Zulu Natal. Escarpment forest and high-altitude grasslands in Mpumalanga. Lekgalameetse, the wolkberg and the soutpansburg area within Limpopo province.
